Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has paid tribute to the founder of the Queensland Youth Orchestra (QYO) John Curro AM MBE, who passed away yesterday aged 86.

Mr Curro went on to conduct QYO ensembles for more than 50 years and toured the globe conducting orchestras, operas and ballets for some of the world’s most prestigious orchestras.
Cr Schrinner has offered Brisbane City Hall to the Queensland Youth Orchestra to stage a concert in honour of Mr Curro.
“John was an extraordinarily gifted man who shared his love of music around the world and this is a fitting way to celebrate John’s enormous contribution to the community,” he said.
“It is hard to express adequately, the legacy John has left behind in Queensland and around Australia; he was beloved by his family, students and audiences.
“There are thousands of students who have been fortunate enough to learn, develop their musical skills and model themselves on John as mentor to them in their youth.
“My sincere condolences are extended to John’s wife, Carmel, their children and extended family.”
The concert will be held on a date to be confirmed.
