Brisbane City Council Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has announced city parking permits will be automatically extended for an extra four months from the date they expire.

“The coronavirus impacts on the city are clear; we will extend permits for parking permits automatically until at least August, so permit holders don’t have to worry about doing anything,” Cr Schrinner said.

“These are uncertain times and we want to ensure any concerns about parking permits are not a worry for residents, given the turbulent times we are facing.”

This announcement is in addition to the Lord Mayor’s that almost 1000 parking meters are being switched off across the city from yesterday.

Parking meters are also being turned off across the city as of yesterday. The shutdown will happen across the weekend, so ignore any parking meter across Brisbane as of this morning, you do not need to pay.

Fees have also been reduced to $5 every day at King George Square and Wickham Terrace council car parks to ensure essential service workers such as health workers, police and emergency services have access to free or cheap car parking.

Existing parking restrictions for people who park in permit parking signed areas still apply to ensure fair access to parking for all members of the community. We expect drivers will do the right thing.

Parking fines are only going to be issued if there is a public safety risk (for example parked dangerously or a hazard to pedestrians and other road users), and we expect community will do the right thing and abide by restrictions.

Council offers a range of parking permits to assist residents and their visitors in accessing on-street parking including resident parking permits, visitor permits, short-term permits (for private events, functions and minor repair works) short term for residential construction works, carer permit,  fleet permits, car-share company permits, health and community permits.
