Residents will get a chance to win from a suite of prizes by signing up to Council’s free weather alert service from August 31.

A family trip to Tangalooma Resort, a trailer full of tools and household emergency kits will all be up for grabs to residents who sign up to receive Brisbane Severe Weather Alerts.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the competition was being run by Council following warnings of another season of potentially severe weather.

“This is a win-win for Brisbane residents,” Cr Schrinner said.

“Residents will not only get access to this important service for free, they will get the chance to win some fantastic prizes.”

The first prize is three nights at Tangalooma Resort in a deluxe beachfront villa valued at almost $5000 for two adults and three children.

The prize includes boat transfers, a desert safari tour, snorkel experience, quad bike tour and a helicopter flight.

The second prize valued at $3000 is a trailer with an assortment of yard maintenance tools.

In total, more than $10,000 in prizes will be available to Brisbane residents who sign up for the alerts.

Cr Schrinner said the Brisbane Severe Weather Alert Service played an important role during the devastating February flood.

“The system, provided by Weatherzone, distributed more than 2.7 million email and SMS alerts to residents about weather conditions and creek levels before and throughout the event,” he said.

“However, we’ve heard the message loud and clear that we need more Brisbane residents signed up to receive these weather alerts.

is competition is just one of the ways we will be encouraging people to sign up for these alerts ahead of the storm season.

“We will also continue promoting the Brisbane Severe Weather Alert service, in line with the recommendations of the Brisbane 2022 Flood Review.”

Cr Schrinner said Council had been working hard to simplify the alerts so they are easier to understand.

“Easy to understand messages will help residents prepare and act accordingly,” he said.

“With warnings of a third La Nina event, residents need to ensure they’re ready and one of the important things they should do is sign up to Brisbane Severe Weather Alerts.”
