Brisbane City Council bus drivers pulled out all the stops for the annual Christmas bus decoration competition, going the extra mile to deck out their vehicles in all things jolly for the 25-year-old festive tradition.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner was today joined by the Deputy Mayor Krista Adams to judge the bus decorations.

“We have the biggest bus fleet in Australia and also the biggest and best display of Christmas spirit, with seven Council depots fitting out buses with tinsel and recycled decorations,” Cr Schrinner said.

“From themes like the grinch, Christmas in Brisbane and summer and winter wonderland, drivers didn’t hold back with their festive festooning.

“I wish I could crown everyone a winner, but Willawong was a standout with their themed bus ‘the Whoville Express,’ followed closely by Sherwood in second with ‘Summer and Winter Wonderland’ and Carina’s ‘White Christmas’ in third.”

Deputy Mayor Krista Adams said residents and visitors could judge the decorations for themselves, with the buses staying themed for all of December.

“Some of the decorated buses will also be part of the fleet taking residents and visitors around town to see the fantastic entries in the 4KQ Christmas Lights competition,” she said.

“The 4KQ Christmas Lights Tour takes people between some of the best entries in this year’s competition in the comfort of a Council bus, leaving from key locations including Chermside, Carindale, Garden City, Indooroopilly and Anzac Square in the City.

“The tours are very popular, so I encourage everyone to head to Ticketek and secure a spot.”

Cr Schrinner said there was even more to see and do in Brisbane this festive season with more than 250 events in the Christmas in Brisbane program.

“Tonight, we’re lighting up City Hall with an aussie animal story for the Gold Lotto City Hall Lights and tomorrow is the much-loved Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols at Riverstage,” he said.

“The Enchanted Gardens have lit up Roma Street Parkland and South Bank Parklands will have carols, live music and visits from Santa.”
