Brisbane City Council Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has announced Council’s 22  pools have closed until further notice to help reduce the spread of coronavirus.

“The numbers of coronavirus case continue to climb and the most important thing we can do right now is keep our community protected and ensure all risks are minimised,” Cr Schrinner said.

“We know how popular our pools are with residents of all ages using them as a meeting place, to learn to swim and for other activities but safety must be our top priority.

“These changes come into line with several other capital cities, including Sydney and Melbourne, who have closed their pools as a preventative measure against coronavirus.

“This decision was not an easy one to make and not one we made lightly, it’s one we’ve made with the public’s best interest in mind to ensure we are keeping people safe.

“This closure extends to all pools, and amenities including gyms, fitness classes and aqua parks, and will continue until it is safe to reopen them.”

Cr Schrinner said while residents were preparing for the recent closures, including libraries, it was still a shock and extremely tough for the community.

“The sacrifices we make now are difficult and unprecedented, but they count in protecting the entire community and will help curb the spread of coronavirus,” Cr Schrinner said.

“I would like to thank the community for their understanding during these uncertain times and commend everyone for adjusting their lifestyle as we work to ensure Brisbane continues to function as a major capital city during these uncertain times.

“Council is working closely with Queensland Health and the Federal Government, and acting in accordance with their guidance.”

“This situation is changing every hour and we continue to ensure we keep the public updated and will reopen pools and libraries as soon as we get advice to do so.
